How To Use This Book
Parents come to this book with different needs. Some are tired and looking for immediate reassurance.
Others prefer to understand the reasoning before they begin. This edition has been structured to support both approaches.
There is no single “right” way to read it.
The Foundation Routine: Where to Begin
At the heart of the Goulding System is the Foundation Routine.
It is the starting point for every family and the place where meaningful change begins.
Every parent who uses the Goulding System learns this routine, and every child hears its steady message of love and happiness through it.
You do not need to read the entire book before beginning.
Everything else builds from this practice. For many families, it is all that is required. Once the Foundation Routine is in place, the remaining chapters tend to feel clearer and more relevant.
If You Want To Begin Tonight
Start with the Introduction — Before You Begin, then move directly to the chapters explaining the Foundation Routine — Chapter 7 — and the Foundation Statement — Chapter 8.
These sections provide practical, step-by-step guidance so you can begin calmly and with confidence.
Many parents choose this path when the need feels immediate.
If your child has significant medical, neurological, or psychological needs, please review Chapter 15 — Special Considerations before beginning.
If You Prefer To Read From The Beginning
You are equally welcome to start at Chapter 1 and continue in order.
This approach provides fuller context for how the Goulding System developed and why it works.
Some families find that understanding the wider framework strengthens their confidence before they begin.
Both approaches are valid.
Choose the path that fits your family’s needs at this time.<br>
Using the Icons in This Book
To make the process easy to follow, two simple symbols are used throughout:
Foundation Routine
Indicates the standard nightly routine.
Use this as your guide for the usual Foundation Statement and everyday steps.
Should Your Child Stir

Indicates a moment when your child wakes, stirs, or something seems unusual.
Follow this guidance only if needed, then return to the standard Foundation Routine.
The Foundation Routine Easy Reference Sheets
The complete Foundation Statement is also provided in two easy-reference places.
You will find it gathered together at the end of Chapter 8, and again on the final reference sheet in Appendix N — The Foundation Routine Reference Sheet.
Appendix N is designed to be printed and folded for easy use, with the practical “what to do” guidance on one side and the “what to say” wording on the other.
Using the Glossary
Throughout the book, you will encounter specific terms that form part of the Goulding System’s structure. If any language feels unfamiliar or unclear, you may wish to refer to Appendix F — Glossary of Terms. The glossary provides concise definitions and clarifies how key concepts relate to one another within the System.
You do not need to memorise terminology to begin. The glossary is simply there as a guide, should you want deeper clarity.
