Chapter 14 — Foundations Before Birth
Introduction – A Voice Before Birth
Parents often ask whether the Goulding System can begin before a baby is born. The answer is simple — you may speak words of love and reassurance at any stage of pregnancy.
Many expectant parents also ask a different question:
“What can I do now?”
Pregnancy is a time of anticipation, preparation, and connection. Some parents play music, read stories aloud, sing, or simply talk to their unborn baby. Others find themselves searching for something meaningful to say during those quiet moments of connection.
If you are looking for a simple expression of love and reassurance, there are few messages more positive than the Foundation Statement itself.
While an unborn baby does not understand the words, they become familiar with the rhythm, tone, and emotional warmth of a loving voice. In that sense, the Foundation Statement can become a gentle way of beginning the connection long before birth.
This chapter is not about a formal Routine. It is not about sleep cycles, structure, or technique.
It is about something older, gentler, and beautifully human — the sound of a parent’s voice and the way babies respond to it long before birth [52].
Long before a baby understands words, they feel tone, rhythm, and the emotional atmosphere surrounding them. The womb is a world of vibration and familiarity.
The Foundation Statement, spoken naturally during pregnancy, becomes part of that world.
The Womb: A World of Rhythm and Familiarity
By around 25 weeks, babies begin responding to sound—not through the ears as we understand sound after birth, but through vibration travelling through the mother’s body. The womb is filled with:
- heartbeat
- breathing
- movement
- digestive rhythms
- the mother’s voice
- Although babies cannot interpret language, they can sense:
- deeper tones
- emotional warmth
- repetitive rhythmic patterns
- familiar voices
- calm vs tension
A Discovery Made By Accident
The story that follows became one of the earliest and clearest examples of prenatal familiarity with the Foundation Statement.
It was never planned. It emerged naturally.
A mother trained in the Goulding System was using the Foundation Routine with her older two children. She happened to be pregnant at the time.
Each night, as she delivered the Foundation Statement to her older children, the unborn baby simply became part of the soundscape.
Months later, with her newborn daughter, something remarkable occurred.
A Mother’s Experience
5th May, 2009
I am very embarrassed to be writing to you so long after I completed the Goulding System course with you. If you remember, I was pregnant at the time and had a 6-year-old boy “A” and a 4-year-old girl “S.” I now have a gorgeous 1-year-old baby girl “O.”
The course has been fabulous for our family. “S” often says “It is getting better and better” with a huge smile. “A” is far more relaxed with a positive, can-do approach to life.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing has been baby “O.” When she was a few months old, I tried putting her into her cot without cuddling her first, and she cried so hard. I rubbed her back and sang, but nothing helped. As a last attempt, I quietly repeated the Goulding System sentences.
Even through her screaming, the words and tone clearly struck a memory — I had spoken them nightly while pregnant. The crying stopped instantly. She turned her head toward me and gazed in wonder. I’ve never seen anything like it. I kept repeating until she drifted to sleep.
She has been the happiest, calmest baby. Thank you for everything you have done. Your System truly is miraculous.
Names have been changed for privacy.
This response was not a miracle, it was memory — memory of rhythm, tone, and emotional association [54].
An Unexpected Side Effect
What makes this story meaningful is that it was serendipitous, not deliberate.
The mother was doing the Foundation Routine for her older children; not “doing the Routine” during pregnancy for her unborn child. Her unborn baby could not have understood the words, but heard those same tones and rhythm repeated each night, and it created familiarity long before birth.
This reminds us that:
- babies remember tone
- they recognise rhythm and vibration
- they respond to emotional warmth
- they feel connection long before they understand it
- The Foundation Statement didn’t perform magic. The mother’s loving voice did.
How to Begin During Pregnancy (Optional and Relaxed)
If you wish to speak the Foundation Statement during pregnancy, keep it simple:
- Sit or lie comfortably.
- Place your hands wherever feels natural.
- Breathe slowly.
- Speak softly and warmly.
- Repeat the Foundation Statement a few times.
- There is no schedule, no formal Routine, and no specific time of day.
- You may even speak it while walking around.
Before birth, it is simply:
- a moment of connection
- a moment of calm
- a moment of familiarity
- a moment of love
After Birth: Recognition and Continuity
After the baby is born, there are ample opportunities to repeat the Foundation Statement.
An ideal time is when you are holding your baby just after feeding, as they drift off to sleep, or when you carry them to the bassinet and gently place them down to rest.
As your child grows, you can begin the full routine.
Every baby is unique. Some responses are quiet, some subtle, and some striking — like baby “O.” What matters most is that your voice becomes a steady, loving presence.
A Final Reflection
The true beginning of this System is not in any technique, step, or script.
It begins with the sound of your voice — calm, loving, familiar.
If you choose to start saying the Foundation Statement during pregnancy, you are simply offering your baby a head start in recognising the most important truth of childhood:
“I am loved.”
The formal Routine begins after birth. But love begins whenever you are ready.
Summary — Love Begins Early
The Goulding System does not require pregnancy to begin. The formal Foundation Routine starts after birth, when structure and timing become important.
But love does not wait for structure.
A baby feels vibration before it hears. It hears tone before words, rhythm before meaning, and warmth before understanding. When a parent speaks gently during pregnancy, that voice becomes familiar. Familiarity brings comfort.
There is no technique required here — only presence.
Whether before birth or after, what matters most is the steady sound of love. The Routine will come in time. The connection begins whenever you choose.
